פרופסור איל בן-ארי סיים את לימודי הדוקטור באוניברסיטת קיימברידג' ולימד באוניברסיטה העברית. תחומי ההתמחות שלו הם בטחון והגנה במזרח אסיה, צה"ל, כוחות ההגנה של יפאן, ונושאים הקשורים לצבאות הדמוקרטיות המתועשות (שירות חובה ומילואים, ניהול שונות, ושינוים חברתיים וארגוניים). הוא כתב שישה ספרים וערך עשרים אסופות בעיקר על צבאות אך גם על חינוך הגיל הרך, קהילות מקומיות ביפאן, ותרבות פופולרית. ספריו על הכוחות המזוינים כוללים אתנוגרפיה של גדוד חי"ר, חשיבה מחדש על היבטים אירגוניים של צבאות בקונפליקטים עכשויים, ומדעי החברה וכוחות מיוחדים. בן-ארי היה בעבר מנהל מכון טרומן למחקרי שלום באוניברסיטה העברית ויו"ר האגודה הישראלית לאנטרופולוגיה, ושימש כיועץ למערך מדעי ההתנהגות בצה"ל והיה חבר בועדות ציבוריות בנושאי משאבי אנוש של צה"ל.
